Posted on 9/5/2022 by Dynamic Dental
Here Is How To Crush The Ice-Chewing HabitChewing on ice is a habit seen in many people and it is not only annoying to those around you but can hurt your dental health. Craving ice-chewing is so common that it has been given a name - pagophagia. When we say chewing on ice, we don't mean those slushy or shaved ice that provides you with sugary treatments. While you should avoid the sugary treats, it is also imperative you steer clear of ice-chewing.

When do You Chew Ice?

Ice-chewing can signal an emotional problem such as stress or obsessive-compulsive disorder. It may also indicate iron deficiency anemia or other physical problems. Some people just like biting or chewing on hard things. For whatever reason you chew on ice, you should break this habit.

Dangers of Chewing on Ice

If you chew on ice, you could experience chipping or cracking of your teeth. You may also damage the enamel. Though your enamel is hard, it can accidentally break or get damaged if you exert a lot of force or pressure on it, especially if it is brittle, thin, or weak. Additionally, chewing on ice is likely to cause sore jaw muscles. If you have existing dental work like fillings, crowns, or other oral devices, you may damage them.

Crushing the Habit of Chewing on Ice

Individuals who chew on ice find that it is a problem in their life. You should speak to a dentist about this habit before it causes serious damage to your teeth. If you find yourself wanting to chew on ice, you can use alternatives like baby carrots, sugar-free gum or xylitol, and celery sticks.

Chomping down an all glass of ice can make you chill down, but it can also harm your teeth. If you have questions, feel free to contact us. We will provide answers and offer solutions to problems like ice-chewing. We can help you do away with the habit. If damages have occurred to your teeth, we can repair the teeth or provide alternatives.
