Simple extraction procedure in general dentistry

Posted on 8/22/2022 by Dynamic Dental
Simple extraction procedure in general dentistryA simple tooth extraction is a simple dental procedure that involves the removal of visible teeth by the general dentist. A simple extraction may be necessary as a result of tooth damage through decay or trauma to the point it can't be repaired. You might also need a tooth extraction for visible overcrowded teeth or when preferred by the patient, being the less costly option. You may only need one appointment for a simple extraction after a diagnosis has been made.

What happens during a simple extraction procedure

A dentist will recommend against using blood thinners medication prior to the extraction to prevent excessive bleeding complications during the procedure. During the extraction procedure, the dentist will numb your mouth with anesthesia to ensure it is painless and comfortable.

Using special dental equipment, the dentist elevates and loosens the tooth. These tools detach the periodontal ligament fibers, widening the tooth socket to enable the extraction. The dentist might tug on the tooth, moving it around with dental tools to loosen it from its socket. Once the tooth is loosened, the dentist uses forceps to remove the tooth from the mouth. Next, a dentist may recommend a ridge graft procedure to restore the jaw bone if an additional dental replacement will be used.

After removing the tooth, you might experience some light bleeding. The dentist stops this by placing a gauze on the site so you bite it down. After the process is due, the dentist may recommend post-operative instructions to ensure you have a smooth recovery. Recommendations include brushing and flossing twice a day and using antibacterial mouthwash to help keep your teeth from damage and the extraction area from infection. You are likely to feel some pain after the extraction, and the dentist may recommend pain relievers. Healing from a simple extraction is quite easy and patients resume their daily routine within a day after the procedure. A tooth extraction has a lot of benefits like stopping the infection from progressing, reducing pain and discomfort, and helping bring symmetry to teeth misalignment.
