How Soy Milk is Different for Your Mouth

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Dynamic Dental Office
How Soy Milk is Different for Your MouthMany people open the refrigerator and reach for a milk alternative to pair with their favorite breakfast cereal. For some people, dietary or allergic reactions cause them to refrain from drinking milk. Fortunately, there are many plant-based milk products. In stores around the world, cow's milk alternatives are available.

Soy milk, for instance, is made from soybeans and filtered water. It may contain thickeners to improve the consistency of the beverage as well as the shelf life. It is a good source of potassium as well as other minerals. It contains as much protein as cow's milk yet does not contain lactose or as many calories.
Milk is the perfect complement for many foods. Not only does milk make a great partner to cereal, but it is also good for your teeth too. However, is soy milk different for your mouth?

Milk is Good For Your Mouth

Dairy products, like cheese and yogurt, are full of calcium which is beneficial to your bones. Calcium enriches the enamel and strengthens your jawbone. It provides needed structural support for your teeth and gums. It is important to eat foods that are good sources of many vitamins and minerals. Milk contains a protein called casein. Your enamel is protected by milk as casein strengthens tooth enamel. When the tooth enamel is strong, it is hard for cavities to form.

What Does Soy Milk do in Your Mouth?

A recent study published in the Journal of Dentistry found that bacteria commonly found in the mouth produce 5-6 times more acid when they are allowed to feed on soy milk than cow's milk. This is a problem: the acid in your mouth erodes the enamel on your teeth.
