Could an Adult Get Better Oral Health from Getting Sealants?

Posted on 2/20/2020 by Dynamic Dental
Could an Adult Get Better Oral Health from Getting Sealants?Dental sealants are a dental device that helps protect the teeth from decay. Typically, dentists place sealants on the back molars. This is because the back molars are more susceptible to the bacteria in our mouths.

Sealants are made of a thin plastic material. Though they are made of plastic, sealants are quite durable and effective at preventing tooth decay.

The most common candidate for sealants is children or teenagers who have gotten their adult teeth. However, adults can also benefit from sealants as well. As an adult, sealants can protect your teeth just like they would on a child or teenager. When an adult gets sealants, their teeth must be clean and free of fillings or cavities.

How Do Sealants Protect Teeth?

The way sealants work to protect teeth is quite simple. In short, they create a barrier between your actual teeth. As mentioned above, this is done with a thin plastic material. The material used is sealants in resistant against bacteria. This means once you have sealants installed, you can expect them to last quite a while. They typically last up to 10 years.

While wearing sealants, you need to take care of your teeth just like you normally would. Though they can prevent cavities, bacteria still have the ability to decay your molars at the base. It's also important to mention that sealants wear slightly quicker than our natural teeth. For this reason, we recommend getting them checked during your regular teeth cleanings. A broken sealant may actually cause a tooth to decay quicker due to increased surface area.

If you're interested in getting sealants, please contact our office. We'd be happy to set up an appointment for you to see if you're a good candidate. While you're here you can always ask any other questions about sealants you have!
