Why Does My Jaw Keep Locking

Posted on 5/1/2024 by Dynamic Dental
Woman holding her jaw at dental appointment at Dynamic Dental Care in Spokane, WAYou can hear popping and clicking sounds when you move if your jaw frequently channels its inner locksmith. It might be a problem with the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). This is a technical term for a complaint in the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. There are several reasons why jaws lock, including the following general ones:

Problems With the Temporomandibular Joints

TMJ is an established factor that can induce pain in the surrounding muscles and jaw. You may develop tight and inflammatory hinge joints between your lower jaw and temporal bone. It may elicit symptoms such as throbbing pain and facial, neck, or jaw soreness. When you eat, you can feel your jaw click.

Stress

Stress can cause you to clench your jaw unintentionally as you sleep. Your jaw may still be locked involuntarily when you wake up. Consequently, the next day, you may experience jaw muscle tension. When you talk or eat, the pain may progressively get worse.

Bruxism

The leading causes of bruxism are typically tension and anxiety. Due to dental problems and misalignment, you may grind your teeth even when awake. Your jaw and face muscles may become tight and uncomfortable due to teeth grinding. This may put you at risk for earaches and headaches.

Tetanus

Tetanus is a fatal bacterial condition. Tetanus symptoms include a locked jaw, abdominal stiffness, pain during muscle spasms, and difficulty swallowing food. To avoid this infection, you must have the Tdap vaccine.

]Incidents such as a fall or a violent hit to the face can damage the functional part of the jaw. Pain or stiffness may result from this. Surgery or chemotherapy used in the treatment of cancer can also sometimes result in a locked jaw.
