Warning Signs For Teething

Woman with glasses smiling after making dental appointment at Dynamic Dental Care in Spokane, WAParents of young babies universally dread the time that their child begins the teething process because babies are notoriously tough to handle when they are teething. However, if you plan ahead and you know the teething warning signs, you can make your baby as comfortable as possible and save yourself a few days of headaches.

When Do Most Babies Start the Teething Process?

Babies can begin teething at any time. In fact, some babies are born with teeth, although those teeth usually fall out after a few weeks. Some babies begin teething at around four months of age, while other babies do not begin getting their teeth until after their first birthday. Most dentists explain to parents that if their babies do not have any teeth after they turn a year old, they need to go ahead and come in for their first dental exam.

How To Tell if Your Baby Is Teething

It can be difficult to tell when your child is teething because they do not have the vocabulary to let you know they are in pain. Parents and grandparents with babies have to become detectives to determine what is wrong with their children. One of the most obvious signs that your child may be teething is if you can see their gums are red and swollen in one area. Baby gums usually swell just before a tooth erupts or breaks free from the gum tissue.

Your child may also run a low-grade fever during the teething process. In general, babies who run a fever while teething have a temperature of 100.5 F or below. If a child is running a temperature higher than 100.5 F, they most likely have something else going on rather than teething.

Also, when your child begins the teething process, you may notice that your baby begins to drool excessively when compared to earlier. Excessive drooling is natural when a baby is teething. If you are worried about your baby and the teething process, this is the perfect time to make an appointment for their first dental visit.
