Oral health and General well-being

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Dynamic Dental Office
Oral health and General well-beingOral health is the state of the mouth, teeth, and gums that enables individuals to perform essential activities like eating, breathing, laughing, and speaking. This encompasses psycho-social dimensions such as general well-being, self-confidence, and the ability to socialize freely. Oral health and general well-being change over a lifetime. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain a healthy oral lifestyle. General well-being is also affected by oral health in the following way.

General concentration

Whenever there is a problem like tooth decay, pain affects the body's general well-being. The discomfort and pain affect general body productivity taking away concentration whenever anyone works. Therefore, it is important to ensure that oral health is maintained.

Oral health and lifestyle diseases

Studies have shown that oral health has a connection with certain lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes. People with diabetes are more likely to have gum and tooth disease than people without diabetes. Medication taken to reduce the effect of diabetes have an impact on the gums of a patient. Diabetes patients have difficulty controlling their sugar levels, which affects oral health. Dentists should give a periodical schedule for patients who are diabetic to curb the risk of oral health diseases.

Oral health and chest infection

Gum disease leads to more bacteria in the mouth, which can lead to a chest infection. People who have gum disease have more bacteria in the mouth. This is most common in the elderly as their immunity is frail. The bacteria can get into the lungs and cause pneumonia or increase the effects of an existing condition. Good oral hygiene is important for this group of people.

Summary

Healthy oral health hygiene is essential not only to the mouth but also to the general well-being. Taking good care of your oral health contributes to a healthy general well-being. It also improves the quality of life.
